Development work in Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, we support peacebuilding, as well as increased employment among women and young people. We work alongside church partners, Ethiopian Guenet Church and EMWAC.

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Conflicts between ethnic groups have been an ongoing issue in the country for decades. Development is slowed by armed conflicts, natural disasters, as well as consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of these conflicts, numbers of internally displaced people increase, there are food shortages, and the Tigray region is also threatened by famine. Furthermore, youth unemployment, and the exclusion of women and young people in peacebuilding work are significant societal challenges.

Including Minorities in Peacebuilding

Fida’s Country Programme in Ethiopia promotes peace and cohesion within communities by supporting the inclusion of women, girls, young people, and people with disabilities in peacebuilding processes. Peace dialogue between various ethnic groups is promoted by emphasising underlying causes of conflicts and poverty. The employment rate and income levels of women and young people are improved through vocational and entrepreneurship training.

Education opened my eyes to my role as a peacebuilder in schools, where future generations are formed.

Helen Nigusje, physical education teacher.

Fida’s partners are the Ethiopian Guenet Church Development and Welfare Organisation, and the Ethiopian Mulu Wongel Amagnoch Church Development Commission.

Development work is carried out in nine regions: Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Dessie, Hawassa, Nekemte, Shashamane, Wolmera, and Wolayta Sodo.
