“Hope Has Awakened” – Fida launches winter relief in Gaza

Fida is launching a winter relief effort in Gaza together with the Swedish Pentecostal relief and development organisation PMU.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues amid a fragile ceasefire. Homes lie in ruins, and a cold, rainy winter is approaching.

– Right now, people urgently need food, warm shelter tents, medical aid, and prosthetics for children who have lost their limbs in the warsays Nashat Filmon, Director of the Palestinian Bible Society (PBS), which is carrying out humanitarian work in Gaza.

– We have done everything we can to keep people from starving. The ceasefire has brought some relief: food and supplies are reaching the area more easily, and prices have dropped. Hope has awakened, Filmon says, describing the situation in Gaza and the West Bank.

As bombings have paused, it has become easier to deliver aid safely into the area. Together with PMU, Fida is supporting PBS’s humanitarian project, which responds to the needs of the most vulnerable families as winter approaches.

PBS has supported families in Gaza and the West Bank throughout the war as much as circumstances have allowed – and Fida has previously channelled aid through their work as well.

Fida and the Palestinian Bible Society (PBS) previously cooperated for over ten years on development work in Gaza and the West Bank.

Reaching families as winter draws near

PBS is now preparing to expand its humanitarian operations in Gaza. The focus is on providing food, medicine, shelter tents, and basic necessities. In addition, PBS plans to restore its partially damaged property in Gaza City to serve as a medical centre, helping even more people in need.

Aid is being directed especially to families who have lost their homes and livelihoods in the war, including those taking refuge in the Catholic and Orthodox church buildings in Gaza City.

– Everywhere you look in Gaza, there is nothing but rubble. Homes are destroyed, and for many, a tent now stands where their house once was. Those who still have shelter are the lucky ones, Filmon says.

PBS also continues to support vulnerable families in the West Bank by distributing food.

– We pray that God would use us as His hands and feet, Filmon says.
– And that the ceasefire would hold, giving us the chance to help even more.
