School Opens New Opportunities for Roma Children

Koululaiset juoksevat hymyssäsuin reput selässään.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of Europe’s poorest countries, with the Roma minority facing particularly tough conditions. Many Roma families rely on collecting and selling recyclable materials for income. Fida, in partnership with a local church and sponsors, is working to create a brighter future for Roma children by supporting their education.

The challenges are significant. Winters in Bosnia are harsh, and many Roma families live without adequate heating, running water, or electricity, leading to frequent illness. However, there is hope: employment opportunities for Roma are gradually increasing as companies receive government support to hire them. Education remains a barrier for many adults, but Fida has been working since 2005 to support schooling for Roma children, now active in three communities: Kiseljak, Živinice, and Poljice.

In class, a Romani boy draws on a piece of paper with a green marker.
