Development work in Kenya

In Kenya, we support children’s education, youth employment, and families’ livelihood opportunities. We work alongside local church partner, Full Gospel Churches of Kenya.

Although Kenya is one of the fastest developing countries in Eastern Africa, a third of the country’s population remains in poverty. Key challenges in Kenya are poor educational opportunities, gender-based violence, food insecurity, as well as poor sanitation and hygiene standards.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to many Kenyans losing their livelihoods, youth unemployment being a particularly significant issue. Moreover, children’s rights remain largely unrealised in the country.

Supporting Education among Children and Youth

Fida’s Country Programme promotes the right to education and a safe life among children and young people. We particularly support vulnerable children and young people, such as orphans, street children, children with disabilities, teenage mothers, and marginalised young people.

Fida’s partner is local Pentecostal Church, Full Gospel Churches of Kenya. Work is being carried out in five regions: Kakamega, Loita, Marsabit, Pwani, and Nairobi.

Continued Education for Teachers, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training for Youth

JTeachers receive training in children’s rights and inclusive teaching methods. Children with disabilities are supported by making school facilities accessible. Clubs are organised where children learn about their own rights. Young people gain skills to help them find employment through vocational and entrepreneurship training. Further, adult literacy programs are organised.

Communities learn about sexual and reproductive health and rights, in order to reduce teenage pregnancies and gender-based violence. Families’ livelihood opportunities, as well as the availability of food and clean water are promoted. The local partner receives training in financial management and advocacy, to be able to act as an independent champion of children’s rights.
